Description
“Between the Waters” is a picture of transition. Created between 1974 and 1977, it feels like a scene that cannot be clearly defined – neither in time nor in space. Figures and fish meet at eye level, as if they belonged to the same cosmos. Their contours are delicate, almost tentative, and seem to be slowly emerging from the flowing background. Nothing pushes to the foreground; everything remains in a state of suspension between proximity and distance, between the human and the animal.
The earthy yellow, gray, and ocher tones create a calm, muted atmosphere that evokes memory more than it does water. Using the mono-sgraffito technique, lines are exposed, and figures appear and disappear as if they were part of an internal dream image. The fish have faces, the humans seem quiet and listening – as if an unspoken dialogue is taking place, beyond language.
“Between the Waters” tells of liminal spaces: of being in-between, of the transition between worlds, states, and levels of consciousness. The picture invites the viewer not to look for a clear-cut story, but to let themselves drift – like in a fairy tale that only fully unfolds within one's own mind.
Was ist Monosgrafitto?
