Image Interpretation
In the foreground stands a towering, dark brown figure with raised arms – the title "Laurentios" refers to Saint Lawrence, one of the early Christian martyrs. Surrounding him are pale, ghostly figures witnessing his fate. The theme of the painting is ancient, while its visual language is radically contemporary.
Atmosphere & Effect
The color palette of deep rust brown and muted gray conveys heaviness, pain, and a quiet dignity. Despite – or perhaps because of – its dark tone, the central figure radiates a grandeur that does not let the viewer go. The surrounding witnesses amplify the sense of an epochal scene.
Background & Significance
"Laurentios" was created in 1983 and belongs to one of Ri Meuser's most intense phases of figurative exploration. Saint Lawrence – deacon and martyr of the 3rd century – is portrayed here not as a holy icon, but as a body and a human being amidst his time. The mono-sgraffito technique gives the depiction a near-carnal quality.
Was ist Monosgrafitto?
