Image Interpretation

A figure with flowing hair and outstretched arms glides over a vast, turbulent expanse of water—half angel, half sea creature, entirely surrendered to the freedom of the moment. Her body merges with the waves, as if the boundary between sky and sea were merely a matter of light.

With one hand, she touches a large blue fish that accompanies her through the current like a familiar companion—that central symbol which, in the work of Ri Meuser von Eschmar, represents purity, bliss, and eternal life. On the horizon, a dark mountain range emerges, lending the image a distant, almost arctic vastness.

Indeed, the scenery is reminiscent of the coasts of Iceland and Greenland, where the artist participated in deep-sea fishing expeditions and experienced the infinite breadth of water and sky firsthand. These voyages off the Nordic coasts left a lasting mark on her imagery—the encounter with the open sea, with fish as living symbols, and with a light that bathes everything in blue and golden veils finds perhaps its most immediate expression in "Angel over the Waters." The dynamic composition, with its diagonal movement from the bottom left to the top right, creates a sense of weightlessness and departure, evocative of the stage sets that Ri Meuser learned to design during her studies in Darmstadt.
