Strange gathering

Description

"Strange Gathering" from 1972 is a work full of mystery, movement, and subtle irony – a composition in which Prof. Ri Meuser von Eschmar reveals her extraordinary powers of observation and her sense for the human unconscious. Created using her uniquely developed Mono Sgraffito technique, this work combines graphic precision with painterly depth and metallic luminosity.

At the center stands a group of fantastical figures: half-human, half-animal, surrounded by elegant clothes and strange masks. Their faces seem both familiar and alien – they appear caught in a silent dialogue, as if they knew more than they are allowed to say. Golden and violet reflections spread across the scene like shimmering light, while fine engravings lend movement and structure.

The "Gathering" feels like a dream in which reality and fantasy flow into one another. Perhaps it is an allegorical round table of human idiosyncrasies – a mirror of social rituals, where the masks of reason struggle to hide what lies beneath.

Through her Mono Sgraffito technique, in which layers of pigment are applied, scratched away, and re-glazed in up to sixteen work steps, Meuser gives the work an almost living surface. The light wanders over it like a silent narrator, revealing new figures and stories with every glance.

"Strange Gathering" is a kaleidoscope of being human – mysterious, playful, and profound all at once. It tells of encounter, proximity, and distance, of appearance and essence – and reminds us that every gathering is ultimately also an encounter with ourselves.
