Description

"Red Hades" is a work of intense symbolism and luminous drama—created between 1974 and 1980, during a creative phase in which Prof. Ri Meuser von Eschmar developed her Mono Sgraffito technique into a completely unique form of expression.

In this large-format painting, fire, movement, and myth unite into a composition that captivates the viewer. The titular Hades—ruler of the underworld—appears here not as a dark figure, but as a symbol of transformation and the creative power within the darkness. Deep red, copper, and gold pigments merge into a seething landscape of energy and emotion.

The Mono Sgraffito technique, in which layers of pigment are applied, scraped away, and reglazed in up to sixteen stages, gives the work its fascinating depth. Light seems to move beneath the surface, as if the painting lived from within. The textures appear volcanic, almost organic—each layer bears traces of movement, of becoming and passing away.

Red—the color of fire, love, and renewal alike—dominates the scene, making "Red Hades" an allegory of the eternal interplay between destruction and creation. Amidst the chaos, one can discern fine lines, hints of figures and faces—as if the artist had captured the souls of the underworld themselves.

This work is more than a painting—it is an experience. A meeting of myth and matter, of passion and precision.
"Red Hades" is a legacy of that artistic vision with which Ri Meuser made the invisible visible—the fire of life amidst the darkness.
