Image Interpretation
In Ri Meuser's unmistakable mono-sgraffito technique, a fairy-tale encounter unfolds: an elegant fairy in orange robes with a feathered headdress reaches out to a golden butterfly, while a loyal dog appears in the reflection of an Etruscan arched niche – a silent symbol of loyal companionship and inner faithfulness. The shimmering silver foil captures the warm light, lending the gold and terracotta tones a dreamlike, almost ethereal luminosity.
Atmosphere & Effect
The work combines tenderness and arcane symbolism into an image that transports the viewer to a world beyond the everyday. Ri Meuser's multi-layered technique – up to 16 working stages on industrial foil – creates a spatial depth that shifts between gold and silver depending on the light.
Background & Meaning
The dog as a symbol of unconditional loyalty and the butterfly as an image of spiritual transformation are recurring motifs in Ri Meuser's visual language, influenced by archaic and Etruscan art as well as her encounters with shamans on the American West Coast. Created in 1990, the work bears its title as an inscribed testament – visible in the handwritten script of the painting itself.
Was ist Monosgrafitto?
