Polarlicht (1988) is an impressive space art painting created using the mono-sgraffito technique, capturing the energy and magic of cosmic light phenomena. Across 35 × 50 cm, a dramatic composition of deep black, vibrant violet, radiant white, and warm gold and copper tones unfolds.
Explosive points of light meet flowing, aurora-like movements of color. The texture of the surface—typical of the sgraffito technique—enhances the impression of movement and depth, as if a cosmic event were unfolding right before the viewer. The interplay between darkness and light creates a powerful tension and lends the work an almost monumental effect.
Polarlicht belongs to the space art phase of the late 1980s and was offered at the time by Ri Meuser for 1,500 Deutsche Marks—an indication of the high esteem in which this piece is held within his oeuvre. A powerful original with an intense presence and a clear cosmic visual language.
