Image Interpretation
In this fascinating mono-sgraffito, a mysterious masked figure emerges from shimmering depths – archaic, ambiguous, and of incomparable luminosity. Ri Meuser von Eschmar layers pigments and gold dust in up to 16 stages to achieve that dreamlike transparency that allows the being's face to hover between reality and myth.
Atmosphere & Effect
The viewer is transported into a state of quiet awe – the masked figure gazes from another time, another reality. The artist's multi-layered technique gives the work a meditative depth, as if an entire cosmos were opening up behind the surface.
Background & Significance
For Ri Meuser, masks were symbolic thresholds between worlds – influenced by archaic and Etruscan cultures as well as by shamanic traditions she encountered on her travels. This work from 1972 belongs to an early creative phase in which the artist developed her unmistakable visual language between fairy tale, myth, and spiritual quest.
Was ist Monosgrafitto?
