Eisvogel (2007) by Ri Meuser von Eschmar unfolds as a quiet, multi-layered scene between closeness and distance, between human and symbol. Several figures stand in a floating space, seemingly connected to one another and yet each immersed in their own inner world. Their faces appear open and questioning, as if they were capturing a moment of pause – a moment between memory and the present. Nothing is narrated explicitly; rather, an atmosphere of silent exchange emerges in which gazes and postures say more than words. At the bottom edge of the image, the kingfisher appears, small and reserved, yet of central importance. As a symbol of clarity, transition, and inner truth, it becomes the silent companion of the scene, a connecting element between the figures and the space that surrounds them. It lends the image a poetic depth and opens it up to symbolic interpretations without being intrusive.
The mono-sgraffito technique enhances this impression: layer upon layer of pigment was applied and then partially removed, lines were scratched in, and surfaces were opened up. This creates a vibrant surface in which forms emerge and vanish as if they were part of an ongoing inner process. The muted color palette of gray, blue, and warm earth tones underscores the timeless, contemplative mood of the work.
"Eisvogel" is not a narrative painting in the classical sense, but a study of a state of being – a poetic contemplation of connection, observation, and the delicate balance between inner world and outer space. A quiet, sensitive original that does not impose itself upon the viewer, but instead leaves room for one’s own thoughts and feelings.
Was ist Monosgrafitto?
