Image Interpretation
An emaciated, expressively drawn female figure with wild white hair and a large, wide-open eye stands on the left side of the image—next to her, an organic, abstract violet shape grows upward, from which further faces, eyes, and strange beings emerge, as if the unconscious itself were entering the picture. The scratch-mark structures on a silvery background make the work vibrate like an inner monologue pushing outward.
Atmosphere & Effect
Violet, gray, and ochre create an oppressive yet fascinating tension—the image looks back, observes, questions. Anyone who looks at it for a long time begins to search themselves: in the shapes, in the faces, within.
Background & Meaning
Ri Meuser von Eschmar lived for a time with shamans on the US West Coast to study their understanding of nature and inner worlds—this inward gaze, into hidden layers of consciousness, finds an almost merciless visual form in this early work from 1971.
