Description

In "Merlin's Family," a world unfolds that feels as if it were entered through a gate of mist—a realm where magic is an everyday occurrence and every being carries a story. Over more than two decades, Ri Meuser von Eschmar developed this monumental fairy-tale image, layer by layer, line by line, in her characteristic mono-sgraffito technique, which condenses color pigments, light, and symbolism into vivid narrative surfaces.

At the center are the figures Meuser refers to as "Merlin's Family": not in the literal sense, but as a poetic kinship of light beings, guardian figures, and nature spirits. Their bodies seem woven from gold, ocher, and delicate shades of blue—half human, half myth.

On the left rises a figure with a crown of three glowing flames, a well-known symbol in the artist’s work: the eternal light that connects knowledge, origin, and spiritual power. Wing-like forms grow from her shoulders, as if she were a messenger between worlds herself.

Surrounding the main figures are animals—birds with small crowns, stags, horses, mythical creatures. They populate the image like a living royal court. Particularly striking: the young rider on the right, accompanied by a hovering, fish-like guardian animal. He appears to be the heir to the magic, just now learning to wield his powers.

The composition resembles a cosmic family portrait: every glance, every gesture, every movement is steeped in legend. The spiral above the figures—perhaps a stargate, perhaps the origin of magic—draws the eye into the depths of the image and opens a space where time plays no role.

Golden pigments, transparent sgraffito layers, and the soft transitions between figure and environment make the painting glow. "Merlin's Family" is not simply a picture—it is a chronicle, a myth, a quiet epic about origin, protection, courage, and the power of hidden worlds.

A work that does not reveal its story all at once, but uncovers a new chapter with every look.
