Image Interpretation
Two figures merge in an embrace that is more than a gesture—it is a state of being. "The Lovers" unfolds like a multilayered dream in which body, nature, and symbols become a single narrative. A powerful fish in vibrant orange and turquoise sweeps through the center of the image—that recurring symbol in Ri Meuser's work, which, in the early Christian sense, stands for purity, bliss, and immortality. Golden blossoms drift through the space, a large bird spreads its wings like a guardian spirit over the lovers, and at the edge of the image appear archaic-looking figures and remnants of columns—witnesses of another time, another world. The entire composition breathes the influences of Etruscan art, with which Ri Meuser von Eschmar came into direct contact through her personal participation in archaeological excavations of Etruscan burial sites. What emerges here is not a couple in the classical sense—it is a myth about the interconnectedness of humanity, nature, and the eternal.
Technique: Mono Sgraffito
The shimmering depth of this work is no coincidence, but the result of an elaborate, multi-stage process. For her mono sgraffito, Ri Meuser von Eschmar applies pigments—here, particularly the vibrant tension between copper orange, petrol green, and liquid gold—in several layers onto a gossamer-thin film. Individual layers are intentionally revealed again, while others are painted over and re-glazed: up to 16 such passes can form a single work. It is precisely this revealing and layering that creates the feeling as if the lovers were literally emerging from an older layer of the image—as if they had always been there and were only just becoming visible. The extraordinary luminosity of the pigments, combined with the transparency of the medium, gives the image a spatial effect that is particularly poignant when experienced in direct light.
The Artist
Prof. Ri Meuser von Eschmar, born in Darmstadt, studied stage design in Darmstadt and fine arts in Aachen. Her imagery is fueled by a life full of encounters with foreign cultures and archaic worlds: study trips took her to Peru, Egypt, India, China, Mongolia, and through large parts of the Americas and Europe. Her participation in archaeological excavations—including Etruscan burial sites—left clear traces in her formal language, which are immediately palpable in works such as "The Lovers." With over 350 solo exhibitions worldwide, including at the Harrods Gallery in London, the Kunstmuseum Bonn, and the Galleria del Arte in Florence, she is one of the most significant German artists of the post-war modern era. She has been awarded the Rubens Medal, the Golden Oscar (France), and numerous other international honors.
Was ist Monosgrafitto?
