A trajectory of light cutting diagonally through the darkness draws the eye inevitably into the depths of the pictorial space, past exploding nebulae in violet and white, turquoise glowing spots like distant solar systems, and golden-brown dust clouds moving sluggishly through the blackness of space. It is not a documented view through a telescope – it is an inner vision of the cosmos, as only someone who has truly felt infinity can paint it. During her study trips through the Gobi Desert, the plateaus of Central Asia, and the vastness of Mongolia, Ri Meuser von Eschmar spent nights under a starry sky that forces one to recognize one's own insignificance. This experience of cosmic silence and expanse is palpable in every square centimeter of this work. "Another Galaxy" is space art in the deepest sense – not as a genre, but as an experience of the world.

Technique: Mono Sgraffito

Hardly any motif makes the magic of mono sgraffito as immediately tangible as this one. Ri Meuser von Eschmar layered pigments – deep black, violet, warm gold, and mineral turquoise – onto an ultra-thin film, only to subsequently scrape them away, overlap them, and glaze them anew in several passes. Up to 16 such layers can form a single work. In the case of the "Galaxy," this very principle of revealing and concealing creates a sense of true cosmic depth: points of light that break through from deeper pigment layers like stars from the darkness of space, structures that appear simultaneously as matter and energy. Light plays a decisive role in the viewing experience – depending on the angle of incidence, the work changes as if the galaxy itself were rotating.

The Artist

Prof. Ri Meuser von Eschmar, born in Darmstadt, studied stage design in Darmstadt and fine arts in Aachen. Her travels have taken her to the most remote places on Earth – through Mongolia, Central Asia, the Gobi Desert, Nepal, Sikkim, and vast parts of the Americas and Europe. This direct encounter with the primal power of nature shapes her imagery, as does her lifelong preoccupation with archaic and Etruscan art. As the creator of mono sgraffito, she developed a unique technique that combines pigments, industrial films, and gold dust into objects of extraordinary luminosity. Over 350 solo exhibitions worldwide – from the Harrods Gallery in London to the Earth Vision Gallery in Palo Alto – as well as international awards such as the Rubens Medal and the Golden Oscar (France) attest to her outstanding position in the international art world.
